Ghost Light Joseph O'Connor 9780436205712 Books Reviews

This book reduced me to a weepy mess more than once. The writing is lyrical and captivating. While the story is less than linear and the characters often charades of themselves this is part of it's charm. Reading this book is looking through the eyes of Molly O'Neill. There is no need for suspension of disbelief as you are swept along by the narration.
Ghost Light is a magnificent novel, richly inventive in its language, delicately poised in its characterizations. Readers have complained that Molly's memories are difficult to follow, as strings of memory may be, but O'Connor will more than reward even moderate attention.
It filled in a lot of information that I didn't know about John Millington Synge and Maire O'Neill aka Molly or Mary Allgood. I had trouble putting it down to eat or attend to business matters. It is beautifully written. Irish Theater is one of my main interests, especially The Abbey Theater, and the people associated with its history, e.g. Lady Gregory, William Butler Yeats, etc. I shall cherish the book always.
The novel traces the complex relationship between John Millington Synge and his much younger actress lover, Molly Allgood. It is based on the extensive collection of letters from Synge to the young Molly, but whereas the letters are all from Synge's point of view, the novel centers on the young Molly's experiences from the time she meets the troubled sickly genius playwright until her death years after his death. O'Connor is a first rate writer, and his creation of the mind of Molly, and also of the heady atmosphere of the Abbey Theatre at the time when Yeats, Lady Gregory and Synge, among others, were in their heyday, makes for fascinating reading.
John Millington Synge is my favorite Irish playwright and I loved seeing him in a personal light in Ghost Light a Novel. While some of O'Connor's details may be subjective, I felt he was true to Synge's character and what we know of his private life. The atmosphere was rendered beautifully in a manner appropriate for such a heart-touching artist.
Real people in real situations, meaning people using others for their own ends and other people hoping against hope that those who are using them aren't. The author conjures the landscapes, environments, architecture, and biases around the main characters, limns their misconceptions of themselves and of those who love them or whom they love. It doesn't turn out well, but that's not surprising when your expectations outrun the reality of those in whom you've placed your hopes.
Fantastic read. Joseph O'Conor is an over-looked writer - in my opinion he completely captures the era which this book depicts. I cried my eyes out reading this book and I've been told I don't have a heart so kudos to Mr. O'Connor for soliciting that response from me. It helps if you are Irish or had Irish parents so you can identify with the themes in the book - an aging Irish actress living in London reflecting on her life while it becomes obvious to us that she has fallen deep into the bottle. His understanding of the loneliness of immigration cuts right to the bone.
