Misunderstandings and contrivances galore with lots of loopholes. If only the MCs actually have a decent verbal exchange...but then no story to tell. Overall, not bad for a debut novel but the plot is barebones. Some historical context is given (Great Circle Race) but nothing else is done to evoke the times or setting (place, clothing, furnishings etc.). For instance, the hero/heroine spend time in 19th century Sydney but there isn't a description at all of the place. There is a vague backstory of someone sabotaging various shipping lines and unexplained animosity between hero and heroine's father. I wish there was more of a protracted sailing race between the hero/heroine but the sailing is terminated pretty early on - probably takes more research and understanding of seamanship than the author is willing to invest in. The second half of the book is much weaker than the first and resolutions are too pat and unsatisfactory. The heroine seems too far off base for a woman of the Victorian era even if she's written as being unconventional (she's a horny virgin seducing the hero on multiple occasions). An aggravating trend in this book is that while both the hero and heroine think the other had done evil deeds, the heroine always seems to make excuses for the hero (and forgives him too easily), while the hero carries on the grudge for an incredible length of time and does nasty things as a consequence of said misunderstanding. The hero (not sure how old he is) is basically a cad (drunk, married but didn't tell the heroine, accusatory without basis) and heroine (she's 20) is a silly, naive, horny and reckless girl. The hero is weak-willed and even the annulment is initiated by his wife not by him. There are some pretty ridiculous scenes: for example, after bashing the hero on the head and tying him up with the explicit plan to leave the ship, she then decides to do a strip tease and have sex with the hero (WTF)! It's mainly sex between the MCs..not much was done by the author to convince the reader that there is actually something deeper between the two. Certainly it seems that the heroine thinks with her hormones more than with her brain.
The author couldn't really decide on the particular genre of her story: historical? seafaring adventure? semi-erotica (mild BDSM)? romance? A little bit of everything and in the final accounting, not enough of anything.
I read the first of her Immortals books which was OK and an erotica (The Master) which I couldn't stand. For me, KC is not an author I care to continue reading.

The Captain of All Pleasures Sutherland Book 1 edition by Kresley Cole Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
kresley Cole is one of my favorite authors.she's done it again with this romantically wild romp sailing across the sea.Two rivals find adventure, love and trust and even forgiveness .I look forward to reading the second book to the Sutherland brothers adventurous romance. Can't get enough of Kresley she's bringing g s life to all her characters.
I've been a Kresley Cole fan for years, and have read, and re read so many of her books, but had never read these. Fun, exciting, steamy, easy read!
This was the first Kresley Cole book I had ever read and to this day is still my favorite Cole book. It's a great love story that has a twist towards the end that I have yet to see in other historical romances.
I read a lot of romances and so I am always delighted when an auther can surprise me. This book had a wonderful turn to it. All I can reveal is that our captain is not as he appears to be.
This book is sensual and I couldn't help but fall in love with the two leading characters. This is a lovely "escape for eight to ten hours" read. I feel that if you enjoy a good historical romance, you will truly enjoy this book.
It doesn't really make sense to summarize this book again since so many other readers did exactly that before me.
Let me just tell you that this love story has everything that makes a good read
- A troubled hero who hasn't yet discovered real love
- An intelligent and resourceful heroine who knows very well what she wants to do in her life
- Nice sub characters who support the plot perfectly
- A plot that is well developed, with lots of changes in scenery, some twists and turns, toe curling sex scenes and a wonderful happy end.
What more could you wish for if you are looking for some pleasurable hours of reading?
This is one of my all time favorite romances set on the high seas during the Victorian era (1856) with a daring sea captain and a worthy heroine. I have read it more than once. It’s a keeper.
The story is centered around two competing shipping companies in 19th century England, and two competing captains (the English Earl, Captain Derek Sutherland, and the American Captain, Jason Lassiter), each of whom must win the Great Race from London to Sydney to survive.
When Lassiter is imprisoned, his daughter, Nicole, who has been raised at sea and can navigate as well as her father, must win the race for him. Nicole cannot resist the handsome Sutherland, who when he first encounters her in a dockside bar, thinks she's a whore. He wants her and then he's lost for her, but circumstances make them enemies. When sabotage of her ship forces her to join Sutherland on his ship for the rest of the race, her spirit and his wall of stone collide; the result is a fast-paced romance that grabs you.
There are many things I can praise Kresley Cole for in her writing, all of which are present in this novel she gives the reader a real historic setting--London and a major sea race in1856; she weaves wonderfully colorful characters into her story so seamlessly the story becomes a tapestry of lives; the story pulls you in from page one--you feel like you're living it and you cannot put it down; the love scenes seem real, each tailored to the character and the story; she lays a good foundation for the emotion displayed; and the plot is interesting with just enough history to ground you in the time.
Cole is simply one of the best romance writers, and even though this was one of her early novels, it is well worth 5 stars. The sequel is THE PRICE OF PLEASURE, the story of Derek's brother, Grant, also a sea captain.
For nautical historic romance at it's best, I highly recommend this one!
