Thieves' Quarry The Thieftaker Chronicles Book 2 eBook D B Jackson

Excellent as always - I enjoy this historical Urban Fantasy and wish that more authors would try this in their writing. Modern Urban is not bad, nor is Historical in and of itself, but there is something about a present-tense feel to a past-tense world.

Ethan Kaille is, as usual, an excellent Sorcery Detective in a Revolutionary time period of Boston. There is enough real world history to give the time and place authenticity, but plenty of fantasy to be fun and not a history lesson. I love this series so much, and has become one of the markers by which I use to guide my own writing.

The ending is never predictable, which makes for a fun read, and the characters are always each unique and interesting. I always envision this as an Old World Harry Dresden series, though with a different and younger actor as the lead.

Great book.

Thieves' Quarry The Thieftaker Chronicles Book 2 eBook D B Jackson Reviews

Four Stars, Plus One More For the Gorgeous cover! "Thieves' Quarry" is the second book in the Thieftaker Chronicles, and it is even better than the first one, "Thieftaker," was. D. B. Jackson has done a first-rate job of writing historical fiction with an Urban Fantasy slant, and it makes for a lot of fun reading.

The hero of the book, Ethan Kaille, is a thieftaker by trade (a sort of Early American bounty hunter), and a conjurer by birth. He can work magic spells by various means, most often using blood (his own), which is the only thing about the series I'm uncomfortable with. I am not put off by monsters, demons, vampires, werewolves, or Satan's minions when I'm reading Urban Fantasy, none of which appear in these books, btw. But constantly slashing at one's own forearm to use the dripping blood for spells just makes me cringe. I'm happier when he is using mullein, grass, rainwater, or wood, myself. However! In this case, I look past the bloody forearm because the rest of the story is so wonderfully entertaining. I just mention it as fair warning to any who are planning to read the series. It will occur. Over and over. But if you just don't think about that part too long, the rest of the story will pull you in and captivate you.

Set in Boston, just prior to the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the Thieftaker Chronicles combine real events and historical figures with the world of magic, and do it seamlessly. It is fascinating to see well-researched events from America's past interwoven with characters of powerful magic in a way that makes you believe the conjurers were really there, and part of it all.

Ethan makes a likable, though flawed, hero, who usually manages to save the day, but not without taking some pretty bad hits along the way. I like that he is middle-aged and plagued with aches and pains acquired over a lifetime of hardship. His habit of barely escaping from one attack with his life, only to go wandering around the dark streets paying no attention to who or what might be following him makes me wonder if his brains aren't a bit damaged, as well as his bad leg. But he's still a man you want to root for, and the books overall, are definitely a different and very enjoyable take on Urban Fantasy. Well done, D. B. Jackson! I am eager to read Number Three!
D. B. Jackson has crafted another fun historical fantasy with Thieves’ Quarry, the sequel to his first novel in the series, Thieftaker. The series takes the reader to colonial Boston and a world where conjurers, called “spellers,” live secretly among the population. Among them is Ethan Kaille, a thieftaker who retrieves stolen goods for a price. And like the first book, Kaille once again finds himself investigating a mysterious murder committed by a new and deadly conjurer.

The murder involves the strange and sudden death of the crew of the Graystone, one of many British warships that have arrived in Boston Harbor for the Crown’s occupation of the city. Agents of the Crown hire Kaille to find the killer, and he must do so quickly, before the colony’s lieutenant governor has every speller in Boston put to death for the crime.

The novel’s mystery is well crafted, with plenty of twists that kept me guessing until the end. Just as intriguing is the series’ magic system, which plays a key role in the tale. When casting, spellers need the aid of a ghost-like familiar (in Kaille’s case, an old medieval warrior he calls Uncle Reg), and every spellers’ magic and ghost has a unique color to its glow. Once Kaille discovers the color of the magic used on the crewmen, he just needs to find the conjurer to whom the color belongs to identify the killer. Jackson has been revealing clues about the magic system in each book, but he has left much of it unexplained, keeping the mystery behind the ghosts and their origins alive for a future tale. Yet he’s explained enough here to make it “believable,” and in many ways the magic system is one of the reasons this series work so well.

The rest of the books’ appeal lies with the characters who populate this fictional Boston, from Kaille’s rival, Sephira Pryce, to his friends at a tavern called the Dowsing Rod, and even historical figures like Samuel Adams. (Honestly, between the tavern and Adams, I always feel like having an ale while reading these books!) Also, the series is inching closer to the Boston Tea Party, and Kaille is beginning to question his allegiance to the Crown. All of this creates a unique world to which I am eager to return. And fortunately, the next book in the series, A Plunder of Souls, is waiting on my shelf.
Excellent as always - I enjoy this historical Urban Fantasy and wish that more authors would try this in their writing. Modern Urban is not bad, nor is Historical in and of itself, but there is something about a present-tense feel to a past-tense world.
